Hi everyone! This is Susan Lazenby and I'm working hard making all the mistakes right and trying to do things with the CERT site to make it easier to use. Big print, easy links, still have a lot to line-up with the grid. I could tell you so many stories about this new beta program from Yahoo. It bugs--but it's safe and I'll eventually get used to it. Proprietary HTML editors are so varied that a person has to learn, it seems, everything all over again.
Actually, this one was too easy, I couldn't figure it out. AAACCCKKK!
Please write me by blog or by email if you would like something posted or have ideas for pages. I like making them and also changing things around. My kids like to tell me my mistakes, so tell me! I'm used to it! Sometimes mistakes don't show-up on my browser or PC.
The blog has a problem with Mac users (sorry) and what I found out, though tech support, was that it does work if you use Mozilla Firefox web browser instead of Explorer or Netscape. I have all three browser links because so many times webpages look COMPLETELY different or work better on another one.
Thanks for looking at the CERT site. Everytime I redo the homepage the visitor numbers change on the counter. I will fix that and get a new counter so everyone knows exactly how many have people have looked at the site. I looked at the information on Yahoo and the Yahoo account keeps track. The Ventura County EMS Agency is looking for volunteers to make phone calls this Friday morning (July 28th) at 10:00 am at their office in Oxnard. I called a few of you and left messages. The agency will be making contact with every single resident type hotel in the county. There is concern for any person that rents a hotel room on an extended basis that may not have loved ones or family to check on them and need callers to make contact. Starting on September 12th, the City of Santa Paula is conducting a week long Emergency Preparedness event. There will be lots of information and publicity prior to the event but I wanted to let you all know that CERT will be a big part of the Saturday, Sept. 16th demonstrations. As many of the team tha is available will be putting on demonstrations of the skills learned in class and at drills. This event, in fact, will be a great drill. Cribbing and lifting, fire suppression, triage and treatment. More information to follow. Steve
Santa Paula PD Officer Jimmy Fogata has just received training as an instructor in pet/animal first aid. It is a Red Cross class. He would like to teach the class here in Santa Paula on a Saturday.sometime before the middle of August. The class is 3-4 hours long. Dear SP CERTs, The week of September 12 through the 16 is going to be a busy one. If you are available to help distribute flyers and calendars to the public on September 12th, meet at the Community Center between 3:00 and 5:00 pm. And please, everyone that can report to either the Community Center or Los Piedres Park on Saturday September 16th. We will want equal numbers at each site, so some may need to relocate but we will be doing 4 hours of refreasher training and public demonstrations of CERT skills. Also in front of fire station 1 located on tenth street there is posted information in front of the fire station. Please do your best to not to be alarmed and wait for instructions through the CERT phone tree or incident commander, or communications officer to respond to any incident regarding this fire. Do not call officials unless you are in danger. You can be updated through many resources. Walley Boggess and his wife will be departing today bound for Pennsylvania to pick up our new rescue truck. I have asked Walley to keep us updated on their journey. What a journey it will be, with record setting lows across the nation, ice, snow, rain it will make for one heck of an adventure! Donations will gladly be accepted to help with the costs involved, as well as funds needed to stock this truck with emergency supplies once it arrives. Good Evening,Santa Paula. My wife, Connie, and I have started the saga of the CERT rescue vehicle. We left LA at 11:05AM with a short 25 lay over in Las Vegas. Heard some slot machines but didn't try one as we had to run from gate 22B to 19A which are in two different time zones. We arrived in Pittsburgh 15 minutes ahead of schedule only to find our luggage did not make the trip from one gate to the next in Las Vegas. We are hunkered down in the Airport Hyatt hoping the luggage will arrive some time tonight. There is a light dusting of snow and the temperature is 17 degrees. We are anxious to get the truck and start our trip to Santa Paula.

Hello from Pittsburgh again. Our luggage arrived this morning at 10 and we were then off to Wexford, about 30 miles north. The temperature was 17 degrees, the weather clear and the roads clear. We met two officers of the fire department, Mike Slater and Jeffery Waller, at the Bradsfordwoods Voluntary Fire Department. We looked over the truck and found it in good condition. It has 19,000 miles, 3,000 of which were added since the Bradsfordwood folks purchased it from Philidelphia in 1991. Insurance issues held us up until 3:30 at which time we took possesion and got as far as Pittsburgh before dark. We are a tad concerned as we head out tomorrow morning because of the continuing bad weather between us and California. We are traveling via Hwy.70 to Saint Louis, then Hwy. 44 to Oklahoma City, then Hwy 40 through Amarillo, Albuquerque, Flagstaff, Barstow, and home. Our truck is limited to 55mph so we will be taking it slowly and carefully. More tomorrow night.

Title: LA County Fire Department drill
Description: CERT members and interested community volunteers are invited to participate as victims with the Los Angeles County Fire Department's (LACoFD) Urban Search and Rescue team in a simulated drill. The drill is intended to replicate a large-scale disaster occurring overseas.
A multinational team from the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Office of Emergency Services (OES) will participate in observing and evaluating Fire Department Personnel.
LACoFD will be participating in a disaster drill which will be evaluated by an international team in order to obtain a United Nations' Classification as highly trained search and rescue professionals.
This classification, referred to as a "Heavy" classification will allow LACoFD personnel to respond to domestic and international disasters when called upon by the United States government.
WHEN: Saturday, January 20, 2007, 10:00 A.M. Thru Sunday, January 21, 2007, Noon
Participants are invited to stay for any portion of the drill. Food and a hospitality tent will be available to CERT members.

We finally got underway this morning and after 11 hours arrived in St. Louis. The truck is running well after a can of STP oil and gas treatment cured a loud lifter. The roads have been clear and the temps in the 20's. Some of my observations from todays drive: all the raod kills were badgers; only one RV seen in either direction (how different from CA); didn't get to stop at the Underground Railroad Museum or the Cabellas home store; the graffeti artist are really poor as compared to the CA vandals; saw the largest cross I ever saw--8-10 stories tall; beautiful rolling forested hills followed by flatter corn andhay fields. Just checked the snow forcast and it looks OK with only 1-4 inch accumulations at most.
Off toward Oklahoma City tomorrow. PS Connie and I have having an excellent adventure.
Hello from Oklahoma city. We had an easy drive across Missouri and into Oklahoma city. Driving in the truck lane certainly gives you a different perspective on travel. We have actually past only 4 vehicles in two days, all the rest have passed us. Missouri was beautiful but absolutely frozen solid. The entire traverse of the state consisted of ice. The state is still frozen a week after the ice storms. Almost all trees were broken because of ice. Everything was white but there was no snow, only ice. Every branch, blade of grass, wire, etc was still covered with an inch of ice. The state looked as though it was made of white glass. The service stations were filled with folks filling cans with gasoline to power their generators a week after the power went down. All rest stops were closed because of downed trees, frozen pipes, and no power. As we approached the Oklahoma boarder, the sun had finally warm up the power lines enough for the ice to start dropping. Snow on the ground into Oklahoma City from last week's storm, but the roads were clear the entire trip, in fact the sun was shining until about 3 this afternoon. Tomorrow looks a bit chancy, but Connie and I are having a great adventure and look forward to the remainder of the trip. Depending on road conditions, we hope to get to Albuquerque or Gallup tomorrow night.
Hello from Tucumcari, NM. We drove 9 1/2 hours today and only made about 300 miles progress. The road conditions were severe across Texas. Oklahoma to the east and New Mexico to the west both worked at clearing the interstate, but Texas only sanded and plowed those stretches of hwy. that were under construction and single lane in either direction. Glaze ice kept us all at very slow speeds with many big rigs off into ditches and the center median. Tractor trailer rigs were backed up for miles and miles in either direction. By 3 this afternoon the sun had broken through and blue sky followed us into Tucumcari. The temperature is already in the mid twenties and should be much colder tomorrow morning. We are having a marvelous time and look forward to whatever tomorrow brings.
The adventure is complete; we have driven the rescue vehicle across the country and turned it over to Mike Gray and the CERT team. I was not able to make connections last night from our motel in Kingman, so will fill you in on the last two days. We left Sunday from Tucumcari in a beautifully, clear freezing morning. The roads were clear as were the skies all the way through Albuquerque. Just before Grants NM, we encountered snow that gradually became a very heavy fall that was sticking to the hwy. Twenty minutes later as we approached Gallup, the skies cleared, the sun shown, and life was good. Stopped for lunch and had sopapillas for desert (they don't make them here in CA). West of Gallup we drove into snow flurries that were light and not sticking to the road but were whipped by a strong cross wind. These flurries lasted until we reached Flagstaff at which time the sun again appeared in absolutely clear skies. San Fransico Peak was spectacular with wind blowing snow and clouds around the summit. We planned to stay the night in Williams, but we were both feeling fine so decided to continue on to Seligman only to find that there were no motels in the town, so on we went to kingman. It was a 12 hour day and we drove 640 miles. Monday morning broke clear and not as cold in Kingman, and drove home in beautiful clear weather. The vistas as we drove across the desert were beautiful. Stopped in Simi and gave the truck a quick wash and arrived home about 3. Called Mike to pick up the truck and he arrive an hour later with Ron and took delivery. I called Mike an hour ago and he said he took the truck to the CERT training and showed off its capabilites, specifically its ability to light up a large area. Connie and I had an excellent adventure and would do it again.

But we can't spend today worrying about tomorrow. We can't sit in our houses waiting for the future to happen. Better to face it head on- with the courage, strebgth, and determination to take on (or fend off) whatever is thrown our way.
Four out of five survival experts agree that the keys to surviving any situation are the following:
BE PREPARED.
DO NOT PANIC.

To avoid frostbite and frostnip, keep extremities warm and covered during cold weather. Use layered clothing and a face mask. Wear mittens instead of gloves, and keep the ears covered. Take breaks from the cold in order to warm extremities whenever possible.

Tip of the week March 11-17th 2007
Filter the water,
This is always the first step to having clean, drinkable water.
Pout the water through a coffee filter, paper towel, ordinary typing paper, or even your clothing (the more tightly woven, the better). You can also make an effective filter by filing a sock with alternating layers of crushed charcoal, small crushed rocks, and sand.
Repeat several times.
Chemically treat the the water, if available.
Add two drops of household bleach for each quart of water. (Use three drops if the water is extremely cold or cloudy.) If no household bleach is available, use one iodine tablet or five drops of drugstore iodine(2%) per quart of water. Let the mixture sit for at least one hour, to give the chemicals time to kill micro-organisms.
Boil the water.
Boil water for at least one minute, plus one minute of boiling time for each 1,000 feet above sea level you are. If fuel is abundant, boil water for 10 minutes before drinking it. The longer the water boils, the more micro-organisms are killed. Beyond ten minutes, however, no further purification occurs. Be sure to let the water cool before drinking it.
Remember when purifying water, you can perform at least one of these steps, you're better off than performing none of them. Remember the more times you filter the water, the longer it ischeically treated, and the longer you boil it, the purer it will be.

Our team is very excited about 2007. We have alot to work to accomplish. Our vision is to maintain supplies for our CERT truck and to fill at least (50) backpacks for (first aid)to be utilized in the event of an emergency. We are also going to discuss a date for a future drill coming up soon for all CERT graduates. Our Planning and trainning commitee is looking forward to growing to develop our Information and Administrative Commitee, Medical, Communications and Operations,Search and Rescue, Logistics for our A-Team. We have a new graduate class among our group and hopefully going to join our team.

Chances are when you start the drill (Operation Lemon Drop) you will quickly realize you do not have the equipment needed to conduct the drill. Rather than having you watch, I will list a few items that will be needed to take part in the search and rescue portion of this drill. (Note: these are items you should have in your gear bag already!)
Flashlights- HIGHLY RECOMMEND HELMET LIGHT! as well as hand held.

Also anywhere you see caution tape on this drill STAY AWAY FROM IT! This is a high hazard drill, use caution with every step you take.

You all did a wonderful job and I look forward to another drill soon. Our team will be meeting soon to view the video that was made during our drill.We are excited about this hoping that it is placed on public access TV in Sept. We have already met to discuss on where we can improve and will continue to do so until we are satisfied. Mark your calendars for May 16, 2007 our next meeting. We will be discussing communications. We are now going to use the RACES guys for all of our communications. This will give us our options and future classes for HAM radio operations. All team members will be given the chance to become trained in HAM operations. We will continue to use our hand walkie talkies but more on a limited use and only distribute to our team leaders and IC. This will take away any confusion in future drills. If you are interested in classes please attend this meeting for information. This will also be emailed to all CERT graduates.

Ventura County Sheriff Department's Ojai Search and Rescue Team, has asked the Santa Paula CERT Team for some help. They need 1-2 persons, in a 4 hour shift, to staff a first aid station at the Faulkner Pumpkin Farm. This will be done over 4 weekends in October. Many of you have called me to find out what is going on, I will update you with what I know. It indeed looks very ominous outside, and there are a lot of fires burning around the county.The Castaic fire that started last night, continues to be blown rapidly to the West. With strong winds anticipated to continue for the next several days coupled with the high heat and low humidities the next few days will be very interesting. There have been several fires that the fire departments were able to jump on quickly, preventing a bad situation from getting worse, one of those being on South Mountain this morning. Historically, fires during the Santa Anas have passed through Steckel Park area and continued behind Santa Paula, towards Ventura and Ojai. Fires have also passed across South Mountain East to West very rapidly on occasion. I have always thought the Oaks would be very dangerous during these high winds, but fortunately I have never seen it happen. I know everyone is anxious to help, but I would encourage everyone to take this time to make sure your house is safe and you have all of your gear in order just in case we get the call. I will keep everyone updated if I hear any other information, you can also monitor AM 1610.

What time does the event start on Friday, and who are the special guests?
According to the chart I received There will be a briefing starting at 6:00 AM on Friday. Cert Training will begin at 11:00 AM. Unknown as to who the "Special Guest" is at this time, maybe its super top secret, I guess you will have to show up to see! Hope to see everyone there!
With all of the shaking going on, this makes for a perfect time to remind everyone to check your supplies(water,food,medical,gear,etc). Our next meeting will be Aug 20, 2008 7:00pm at Logsdons. Other teams from Ventura County will be joining us for this meeting. Some of the topics we will be discussing is mutual aid between the county teams. September 5 will be the Santa Paula's emergency preparedness event. Details are still being worked out, this year it is anticipated that the event will be held along Main Street with the car show. We will also be discussing the Operation Sunrise drill held at CSUCI. Special thanks to Dan Wall for putting on such a great event, it was a BLAST! Keep posted, more information to follow.
